The V 100 was too light for heavy shunting. That is why the Federal Railroad ordered a new series from Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK). The V 90 - referred to as the 290 series from 1968 - was to be based closely on the successful V 100 multi-purpose locomotive. This was less apparent externally; the V 90 turned out to be much more angular than the V 100. Inside, however, the Federal Railroad had tried, and tested components installed, for example the traction diesel engine that worked in the V 100.20 (212) and a very similar cardan shaft drive. On August 4, 1968, the Federal Railroad accepted the V 90 001. 20 pre-series locomotives proved the quality of the design in the tough everyday shunting routine. The series version showed only minor design changes. By September 4, 1974, the Federal Railroad received a total of 387 series machines from MaK, Deutz and Henschel. Procurement ended because the 291 series was a more powerful variant. The 290 999 was a Bundeswehr locomotive rented to the Bundesbahn. In 1990 the Federal Railroad bought it and gave it the number 290 408. The machines are still in use at all major marshalling yards and also cover handovers. However, they no longer have their original numbers. After installing the radio remote control, the railway gave them the designation 294. However, they no longer have their original numbers.
